  • GPS Insights — Early December 2008

It is that time of year when we reflect or reminisce about the year that has passed, ponder our reactions to the year?s past events, and look forward to what the New Year will bring.

GPS Insights — Early November 2008

There are those who, while intelligent in their own areas of expertise, just don't get the GPS and all it can be. They fail to see the big picture, and unfortunately for the warfighter, many in the military fall into this category.

I can tell you that for a journalist or anyone that takes copious notes in the field, the Capturx pen is an incredible recording device. As you record data in your special notebook, you not only have your original notes, but when you plug the digital pen back into the docking station at the end of the day or end of the interview, all your notes appear on your computer screen.

Delaying the launch of the Delta II rockets until an indefinite 2009 date is a problem that needs to be resolved sooner rather than later. The IIR-M satellites designated IIR-20(M) and IIR-21(M) are critical to the sustainability of the GPS constellation.

I certainly do not mean to sound jaded; I am totally in favor of fully populated GLONASS, Galileo, and GPS IIF constellations. Both non-U.S. programs represent positive developments in the GNSS world, but one cannot help but marvel at the irony, audacity, and incredible rhetoric of some of the ION plenary presentations.

Basically the ike305 is a commercially built, but militarily rugged handheld data capture and transmitter device that cleverly combines a GPS receiver, laser distance meter, integrated compass and inclinometer, a high definition digital camera. It's all tightly integrated with the latest HP IPAQ handheld computer.

    GPS Insights — Late August

I have always said that communications is a key component of the PHGPST, but lately the stories I have heard from our warfighters have led me to believe or to understand that to the warfighter communications really is a critical piece of the overall situational awareness or SA picture; much more so than even I realized.

Apple's iPhone and iTouch application development capability overall allows you and me as well as the military and government user to write programs for the devices. If there is a capability out there that the warfighter needs and does not have, they now have the capability to write the program personally or contract with a software geek, or someone who can write code.

GPS Insights — Late July 2008

This month I personally visited the system acquirers at the GPS Wing, the operators at the 2SOPS at Schriever AFB, the two contractors, Raytheon and Northrop Grumman, that are bidding the modernized ground segment contract known as OCX, and I will soon visit Lockheed Martin, winner of the space segment contract. Everyone is upbeat, and the programs are on currently on track, so let's talk about the Perfect Handheld GPS Transceiver.
